My reflections on last Saturday's network meeting in San Francisco was that it went very well overall, minus a few hurtful rough spots. This is not an official report, but I do feel that it is appropriate and relatively accurate.
  1. The network conducted its "business":
  2. Roy Crew of San Francisco was elected to the Cal-Net Board of Directors
  3. Mike Eipp of Santa Cruz and Sharon Schmidt were elected 1st and 2nd Alternates respectively
  4. The Bay Area's Project for this new fiscal year was selected to be Advocacy... on Housing- fair, affordable, stable (including training and peer support)
[I leave the exact wording of the project to an official report]
  5. Alice Washington presented info and gathered support re: Peer Training Project(PTP)
  6. Maria Mar addressed some of the legislative issues.
  7. It is really impressive how strong finally the network has become at the legislative level!
And people deserve credit for it.
  8. What I refer to as "the under represented voice" of the consumer community also managed to articulate itself. This is a very significant event. These are my words.

"This voice" of the consumer community and movement has been all but dismissed by the reductionist political agenda of the Network. Topically, the network has focused almost exclusively in the legislative arena and has reacted aggressively toward those "perceived" as not reinforcing this attitude. This "defensive" posture would seek to control the "interfaces" of consumer organization from the local to the state level, by controlling meetings and electronic lists like this one, and to disallow the more wholistic perspective (and to hurt and alienate those who pursue it).
  9. the question is whether or not venues like this list and network meetings from the local level to the regional and state level will be viable for anything but this reduced political agenda.
Respectfully,

Stephan DuBose
